How we charge, in plain language
Most law firms hide this page. We think you should know what things cost before you pick up the phone, so here it is: every way we charge, what is included and what is not.
Fixed fee
One price, agreed in writing before we start. Used for conveyancing, wills, powers of attorney, settlement agreement reviews, contract reviews and most standard documents.
Best for: work with a predictable shape.
Hourly, with a cap
An hourly rate against a written estimate and a cap we will not exceed without asking you first. You get a statement every month.
Best for: disputes and matters that depend on how the other side behaves.
Staged budgets
Larger matters are broken into stages, each with its own quote. You decide whether to continue at the end of every stage.
Best for: litigation, transactions and anything that may take months.

Questions
Things people ask about cost
Do you charge for the first call?
No. A first conversation of up to twenty minutes is free. If you would like a longer initial consultation with written advice afterwards, that is a fixed fee and we will tell you the price before we book it.
What if the work takes longer than you estimated?
On fixed-fee work, that is our problem, not yours. On hourly work we will warn you before we reach the cap and agree what happens next. We never simply send a bigger bill.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes, on most matters. We will agree a schedule with you at the start.
Do you offer legal aid?
We do not currently hold a legal aid contract. If your matter may qualify, we will tell you at the first call and point you to a firm that does.
Is VAT included in your quotes?
Quotes are shown without VAT, which is added at the current rate. We always state the total including VAT in the written quote.
