What happens without a will
The intestacy rules decide who inherits. Unmarried partners receive nothing. Stepchildren receive nothing. Depending on the size of the estate, a spouse may have to share with children. None of this depends on owning property.
What a will actually does
Names the people you want to benefit, including partners and friends
Appoints guardians for children under eighteen
Chooses executors you trust to sort things out
Records funeral wishes and gifts of particular items
A simple will is a fixed fee and usually takes one meeting. It is the least dramatic legal document you will ever sign.
